The Independent Companion

Cats have lived alongside humans for about 10,000 years, yet they remain far less genetically altered than dogs. There are roughly 70 recognized breeds, but the vast majority of the world's 600 million domestic cats are moggies (mixed breed). Cats are obligate carnivores, crepuscular hunters, and — according to the latest research — far more socially attached to their owners than their aloof reputation suggests.
